Proverbs of Wisdom

James 1:5-8 - 5 "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways."

I Kings 3:5-28 - Solomon asked for and received wisdom.

Solomon was given wisdom because he asked.

We receive wisdom because we study the Bible to determine God's wisdom.

Examples of wisdom in the Book of Proverbs.

21:11 - "When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge." A person can learn from the mistakes of others.

21:17 - "He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich." You ought to like work because you will be doing a lot of it.

20:11 - "Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right." And we are too.

20:14 - "It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth." He says this to lower the price, but brags later.

20:13 - "Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread." Get out of bed, and go to work!!

19:18 - "Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying." Loud yelling doesn't mean that the child is hurting.

26:17 - "He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears." Now what to do you do?

26:9 - "As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools." Alcohol dulls feelings, like the mind of a fool is dulled to proper learning.

26:14 - "As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed." You have to push them both to get anything done.

26:20 - "Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth." Quit gossiping, then there will be no gossip.

28:19 - "He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough." Work is the way to wealth. Schemes may produce sudden wealth, but not consistently.

22:3 - "A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished." A look ahead will keep you out of trouble.

23:13 - "Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die." Correction by parents will save a child from getting killed by foolishness. Also you won't kill you child by spanking him.

15:16,17 - "Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith. 17 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith." God can give peace when possessions can't.

15:13 - "A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken." Make yourself happy. If you don't, your spirit will be broken by constantly thinking about bad things.

16:7 - "When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him." Don't worry about pleasing or outdoing your enemies. Or avoiding their works against you. Worry about pleasing the LORD! God will take care of your enemies.
