Pride

Pride is thinking you are above others. It is being arrogant. It is having an excessively high opinion of yourself. Today this isn’t called “pride”, it is called “self-esteem”. It is the “me” generation coming to the front, believing they are the most important of all.

Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD [is] to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

God states that evil is: pride, arrogancy, the evil way and the froward mouth. All of these things are hated by God, and should be hated by us.

Proverbs 11:2 [When] pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly [is] wisdom.

Having pride and having shame are inseparably linked together. To have one is to have the other. On the opposite side is being lowly (which is humble - or having a right, scriptural view of ones self. To see oneself as God sees) which is inseparably linked to wisdom (especially having the wisdom of God.)

Proverbs 13:10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised [is] wisdom.

Pride brings contention or fighting, but the well advised (the one who understands Godly principles and acts on those principles) is inseparably linked to wisdom (especially having the wisdom of God.)

Proverbs 14:3 In the mouth of the foolish [is] a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.

You can tell if a person has pride by the way he talks. The words of the wise are Godly words, and reflect the presence of God with them.

Proverbs 16:18 Pride [goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Pride brings destruction, as a haughty (a lifted up thinking of importance) spirit brings about a fall.

Proverbs 29:23 A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

Pride will bring a person low because destruction and fighting comes with pride. Though a person may think he is better than others, his haughty spirit will soon bring him down. Honor (not the honor of the individual, but the honoring of the principles of life) will keep the person who sees himself as God sees him. (There is worth in the individual, but this worth comes because God has touch the person, not because they are of worth without God.) Both of these things is the natural result of principles this world operates under.
