Hebrews 2

Verse 1 - Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

  1. The word “therefore” indicates that Paul is continuing his argument concerning the authority of Christ in salvation. See the notes on chapter 1 for a fuller explanation.

  1. Keeping true to God.

    1. Letting the Word of God slip.

      1. The word “slip” means to run out as leaking vessels, like water running out of a bucket which has a hole in it.

Verse 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward;

  1. The word spoken by angels.

    1. Scriptures.

      1. Acts 7:53 – “Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.”

        1. Stephen is preaching to the stiffnecked Israelites, revealing to them the law came to them by the disposition (arrangement or instrumentality) of angels.

        2. Israel has not kept that law, therefore they are being held accountable to God.

      2. Gal. 3:19 – “Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.”

        1. Paul adds force to the reliability and durability of the law by stating that it was ordained (arranged, prescribed, appointed, given, ordered) by angels.

        2. Paul is saying that every person will be held accountable under the law, even if they disregard the law.

  1. Definitions:

    1. Transgression means a violation or breaking.

    2. Disobedience means inattention which leads to disobedience. The word means to mishear or to neglect to hear, thus disobedience follows.

Verse 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

  1. If people haven’t listened to the Word of God, letting it slip away, how shall they possibly escape the terrible judgment of God?

    1. Matthew 4:17 – Jesus preached “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

  1. Confirmed unto us by them that heard him

    1. Luke 1:1-3 – “Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, 2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; 3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,”

    2. Acts 1:21,22 – “Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

    3. Acts 10:41-42 – “Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.”

    4. Acts 2:22 – Peter preached concerning Jesus on the Day of Pentecost.

Verse 4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

  1. This verse speaks of the miraculous signs and wonders done by the early church (apostles and those the apostles laid hands on.
