Dwelleth means to live there or stay there
permanently. Refer to John 15:4,5 "Abide in me, and I in you. As the
branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can
ye, except ye abide in me. 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that
abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without
me ye can do nothing."
Secret place - The blessings here promised are not
for all believers, but for those who live in close fellowship with God. Every
child of God looks towards the inner sanctuary and the mercy seat, yet all do
not dwell in the most holy place; they run to it at times, and enjoy
occasional approaches, but they do not habitually reside in the mysterious
presence. Those who through rich grace obtain unusual and continuous communion
with God, so as to abide in Christ and Christ in them, become possessors of
rare and special benefits, which are missed by those who follow afar off, and
grieve the Holy Spirit of God. Into the secret place those only come who know
the love of God in Christ Jesus, and those only dwell there to whom to live is
Christ. To them the veil is rent, the mercy seat is revealed, the covering
cherubs are manifest, and the awful glory of the Most High is apparent: these,
like Simeon, have the Holy Ghost upon them, and like Anna they depart not from
the temple; they are the couriers of the Great King, the valiant men who keep
watch around the bed of Solomon, the virgin souls who follow the Lamb
whethersoever he goeth. Elect of the elect, they have "attained unto the
first three", (I Chron. 11:21) and shall walk with their Lord in white,
for they are worthy. Sitting down in the august presence chamber where shines
the mystic light of the Sheckinah, they know what it is to be raised up
together, and to be made to sit together with Christ in the heavenlies, and of
them it is truly said that their conversation is in heaven. Special grace like
theirs brings with it special immunity. Outer court worshippers little know
what belongs to the inner sanctuary, or surely they would press on until the
place of nearness and divine familiarity became theirs. Those who are the
Lord's constant guests shall find that he will never suffer any to be injured
within his gates; he has eaten the covenant salt with them and is pledged for
their protection. (The treasury of David, by Charles Spurgeon.)
The Psalmists is also saying that the person who
dwells continually in the secret place of the most High shall also abide under
the shadow (protection) of the Almighty. This protection is not like we often
think it to be. We think of God’s protection as "nothing evil or bad
will ever happen to me." We think of God’s protection as being
comfortable all the time, and having the best this world has to offer. This is
the world’s view, not God’s view. Notice Acts 12:2 – James was killed.
Was he killed because he wasn’t faithful to God, or because he was faithful
to God? He was killed because he was faithful to God, right? Stephen is
another good example. There are many examples of faithful men of God who gave
their lives for the cause of Christ. The Bible says in II Timothy 3:12, "Yea,
and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution."
There are men like Jonah, who rebelled at God’s instructions and did not
live under the shadow (shade or defense) on the Almighty.
Read II Chronicles 19:1-15 - Jehoshaphat was not a
perfect man, as we are not perfect. When his nation (Judah) was in
mortal danger, God protected them, when they asked for help. God will do
exactly the same thing for us today, if we will only see the danger we are in,
and if we repent of our sins, realize our absolute helplessness to help
ourselves, and ask God for his help. II Chronicles 19:12 relates the
helplessness of Jehoshaphat and his dependence on God. So we should
recognize our helplessness and total dependence on Christ for the daily
necessities of life. Christ declares we should ask for our "daily
bread", but we don't. We ask for at least a years supply, not
daily. May God help us to be content with daily provision. 1 Timothy 6:8
states, And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
Be very careful to read the entire context. Remember faith is believing
God when we cannot see the end result with our eyes, but by the eye of the
spirit.
