A. In verse 24, 25, Paul instructed the Corinthian church the observance
of the Lord’s supper was to remember the broken body and shed blood of
Jesus Christ.
B. In verse 26, Paul explains the observance of the supper is to show
others the Lord’s death until he come again.
C. Paul gets his thoughts on these two points from Luke 22:19 where Jesus
states, …This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance
of me. The word "likewise of Luke 22:20 reveals the liquid element
of the Lord’s Supper should also be a remembrance of the Lord’s shed
blood.
D. The entire purpose of worship is to remember what Jesus has done for
us.
1. When we remember what Jesus has done for us in salvation, we will
automatically remember our exceeding great wickedness and his mercy and
grace toward us in giving us his eternal salvation.
2. I was raised with the wrong thought about the Lord’s Supper.
a. I was taught much about preparation for the Lord's Supper, but
little about the true worship of the Supper.
b. I was taught that I was going to suffer immediate and terrible
chastisement if I took the Lord’s Supper wrong.
I was taught many had died because they took the supper wrong,
therefore I would die too.
c. I do not remember being taught to enjoy worshipping God during the
supper, just as I do not remember being taught to enjoy worshipping God
during the regular services.
3. I teach this subject again tonight because many of the younger
people in our church have never been subjected to such evil teaching, but
they need to understand the preciousness of correctly observing the Lord’s
Supper.
4. Everything we do must be directed toward Jesus Christ and adoring
him.
a. We should not be thinking about how we have got have straightened
everything out, therefore we are able to observe the supper.
b. We should not be thinking about what we are going to do when
services are over, or what we have just gone through before we got here.
c. We should be thanking Christ for his unspeakably great gift of
eternal life.
