John 19:28 - After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

Psalms 69:21 - They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

I. Here we have proof that Jesus was indeed the "God-man."

A. This one who hung on the cross was not a divine man, or a humanized God.

1. He was the God-man: two men in one.

2. Jesus had journeyed with man, Jesus had done things that only men can do.

a. Luke 2:7 - Jesus was born a baby and "wrapped in swaddling clothes".

b. Luke 2:46 - as a boy, Jesus "asked questions,"

c. Luke 2:52 - As a child, he "increased in wisdom and stature,"

d. Luke 10:21 - he "rejoiced,"

e. Matthew 4:2 - "an hungered,"

f. Mark 1:35 - he "prayed,"

g. Mark 4:38 - he "slept,"

h. Mark 6:6 - he "marveled,"

i. John 4:6 - as a man he was "wearied" in body,

j. John 11:35 - he "wept,"

k. John 11:33 - and he "groaned,"

3. Philippians 2:6-8 - Jesus was indeed a human being, God incarnate in the flesh.

B. Jesus became flesh that he might win those of the flesh to himself.

1. No person will ever have the excuse, "Jesus just doesn’t know my problems."

2. Jesus knows everything about everybody, including the way we suffer.

3. Actually Jesus knows our sufferings even better than we know them.

4. Jesus sees everything, we only see a part of things.

II. We can also see the intensity of the sufferings of Christ.

A. Jesus had undergone a lot of suffering during the last twenty four hours.

1. As soon as he had instituted the Lord’s Supper, he had gone to the Garden of Gethsemane, where he had prayed to his Father.

2. Judas had come and betrayed him.

3. He had been led away to much punishment.

4. He was beaten with a scourge, had a crown of thorns placed on his head, had a mock purple robe placed on his body, been led across Jerusalem twice, had undergone questioning, from two judges, both of whom said he was innocent.

5. He had then been taken to Golgotha, where he was nailed on the cross.

B. Can you imagine the pain of having a nail driven into your hands and feet?

1. Jesus bore all this pain, yet never uttered a word.

2. Then on the cross, Jesus hung in the burning sun for three hours, then through the three hours of darkness, during which he was forsaken by his Father.

3. When all of this was over, then Jesus cried, "I thirst."

III. Jesus said, "I thirst".

A. Psalms 32:3-5 states, When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. 4 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah 5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.

1. In this prophetic Psalms, Jesus proclaims that he was silent upon the cross, and that he had no moisture whatever.

2. Sometimes, we get thirsty when we work or play for thirty minutes or one hour, but Christ had no moisture for about 24 hours.

B. God had turned his back upon his Son.

1. Jesus was empty of strength, but only in his body.

2. Jesus’ mind was as clear as it had ever been.

3. Jesus’ body was racked with pain, his heart was melted in the midst of his bowels, but his mind was not foggy, or in the least disturbed by the pain.

4. This shows the greatness of God, and the strength God alone can have and can give to us.

IV. Notice in John 19:28, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, ‘I thirst’.

A. Jesus didn’t say "I thirst" because he was thirsty, but because the scripture said that he should say it!

1. Can you imagine the power of God, that Jesus knew that all things were now accomplished, and that only one scripture yet remained to be fulfilled?

2. Christ, in his clear and perfect mind, had gone through all of the prophecy of the entire Bible, and knew that all things were accomplished, except Psalms 69:21.

3. He had not yet been given anything to drink.

B. There was also a certain thing to drink.

1. Jesus said, "I thirst," and God took care to see that Jesus was given the right thing to drink.

2. After Jesus had taken of the vinegar, he knew that all of the scriptures concerning his death had been fulfilled.

C. I would ask you, did Jesus die helpless?

1. Or did Jesus know everything that was going on?

2. Was Jesus still causing things to happen?

V. We can also see how that Jesus depended upon his Father when he asked for a drink.

A. Remember when God had caused water to come from the jawbone of the ass to quench the thirst of Samson?

1. God had caused water to come from the rock, at the command of Moses.

2. When Satan tempted Christ, he could have turned rocks into bread, but he refused to do so.

B. It was not his Father’s will that Jesus would now create water, or that Jesus might quench his own thirst.

1. But Jesus would depend upon his Father for this.

2. Everything that Jesus did was so that his Father might be given glory, and not to satisfy his own lusts.

3. So should it be with us.

VI. When Jesus died on the cross, he paid every saved persons hell.

A. A person who is saved, will never have to go through the torments of a fiery hell, because Jesus paid our hell.

1. When Christ cried, "I thirst," he was then paying a part of our hell, and all this upon Calvary’s cross, and not after he had given up the spirit.

2. In John 4:14, Jesus told the woman at the well, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again, but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give Him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

3. Jesus cried "I thirst" and because of the power of God, saved people shall never thirst again, John 4:14.

B. But those that refuse to take of the water of life that Christ offers, shall thirst through all eternity.

1. Look at the rich man, as in hell he lifted up his eyes and asked for a drop of water so that his tongue might be cooled.

2. He was in torment in the flames of hell.

3. How great is his spiritual thirst?

4. Notice that water was the first thing the rich man asked for.

5. If you die lost, you will go to that place of torment and there you will cry out for a drop of water to cool your tongue.

6. But if you accept the free gift of living water from Christ, you will never thirst again. Jesus has already been thirsty for you.

7. Trust in Him today.

8. Revelation 21:6 - And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
