Verse 1-6 - Israel was greatly distressed because they had forsaken God and
His worship. According to what Gideon stated in verse 13, compared with the fact
that Gideon’s dad had an altar to Baal showed that Israel had not completely
forsaken the worship of God, but had mixed the worship of God with the worship
of Baal, which thing God hates.
One person can make a difference - if led by God. A person must be
touched by God, not "volunteer" because they have a sense of
obligation.
One of the most important things Israel did was to call upon their God for
deliverance. It is important to notice that God did nothing until Israel
called upon Him. In all their rebellion against worshipping God only, God
still heard the cry of His children and sent them a deliverer.
Verse 7-10 – When God moved on Gideon, he did not move on him only. Before
God sent a deliverer, he sent a prophet to tell them they hadn’t obeyed Him.
Israel didn’t run the prophet off, or kill him, or torment him in any way.
There is no record they listened, or that they didn’t listen. I personally
believe they listened, for verse 11 continues with the fact that God sent an
angel to Gideon, for he was the one God would use to deliver Israel from the
Midianites.
Verse 11 - the angel appeared to Gideon before the Lord talked to Him. Notice
the words "angel of the LORD", verse 2, and the word "LORD"
in verse 14. This shows us the progression of burden put on Gideon by the Lord.
Verse 15 - Gideon didn’t believe he was great enough to be used of God,
but God would make Him great. He knew he could not do this work of God
himself, but needed "outside help", or help from outside himself.
Verse 17 - When Gideon asked for a sign that God was with him, Gideon
prepared food and placed it on a rock. The angel then caused fire to come out
of the rock and then departed out of his sight.
Verse 25 - Before Gideon could deliver Israel from the Midianites, he
must first be proved. He must first destroy the altar to Baal that his father
owned. If a person won’t take care of their private, personal affairs, he
certainly won’t take care of public affairs.
Verse 31 –When the altar was destroyed, the men of the city rose up and
demanded that Gideon’s father deliver his son up to die. Gideon’s father
defended him, saying that Baal should plead for himself if he is a god.
Somebody has got to stand by those that are right in the eyes of God. There
has got to be some personal convictions about standing for the truth of God,
and the men he has called into his service. You might not be called to be a
Gideon, you might be called to encourage a Gideon.
