I Corinthians 1:17-18 - For
Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of
words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. 18 For the
preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are
saved it is the power of God.
Many churches use contemporary music as a way to draw people to the services,
which practice is a great departure from Scripture.
John the Baptist never sung a song, but preached the gospel and people
came to hear.
Jesus Christ never used music to draw a crowd to hear him preach. He
simple went among the people and started teaching and preaching.
There is no record that any of the Jewish synagogues used music as a
"draw" to get people to come to their services. There is ample
evidence they used the Word of God.
There is no record of any song at all on the Day of Pentecost. It was the
preaching of the Word of God that convinced people they needed Jesus as
their own personal Saviour.
There is no record of the Apostle Paul using music in any way whatsoever
as a "draw" to get people to listen to the gospel message. The
only time music is mentioned in connection with somebody being saved is in
Acts 16. Paul and Silas were put in jail because they cast the demon out of
the young woman, and when her masters saw their hope of gain was gone, they
raised such a ruckus, Paul and Silas were put in jail. Not only were they in
jail, they were put into the inner chamber, and their feet made fast in the
stocks.
Personal Examples.
I spoke to a man who was instrumental in getting contemporary music into
their church. He spoke of the community survey that were done to find out
what people wanted in a church service. He spoke of how much it cost to get
their church building ready for all the bands, the amplifiers, the lights,
so forth. When I asked him when he was saved, the words were like a knife
into his heart. He told me he did not know if he had ever been saved.
I spoke to a man whose is heavily involved in the rock music in their
church. He told me his wife believed the music was more important than the
preaching.
Two women were driving to their church services, but were running late,
so decided to stop at Independence Baptist Church so they could go to
services. The church they normally attended is well known for its rock
concerts praise type singing, while being very short on Biblical substance.
It is a very rich church, a very large church. They are large because they
are giving the people what they want, not necessarily giving worship to God.
While they were driving, they were discussing some Bible question. During
the message, I answered the question. I, of course, did not know what they
were speaking about on their way to services. They thought God had answered
their questions, so the next Sunday, they decided to come back to IBC.
Again, they discussed Bible questions on the way to services, and again, God
supplied the answer to their inquiries through the message. Again, I knew
nothing about their discussions. It was impossible for me to know what they
were talking about on their way to services. When I visited with the ladies,
they told me of their discussions and how God had answered their inquires.
They were very interested in IBC, and wanted to know more about what we
believed, preached and practiced. I gave them some materials to study. They
came to services several times, but finally told me they would not come
again. They loved the people, and felt very welcome in the services; they
loved the preaching and felt they were growing in grace and truth, learning
the Scriptures. But they did not like the singing. What kind of singing do
we have at IBC? We have congregational singing. Sometimes we have a special,
but mostly, we have congregational singing. Do you understand that these two
precious ladies had rather have
