Job 13:15 - Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him...

I. Look at what Job has.

A. Job’s character.

1. Job 1:1 – A perfect man.

2. He feared God.

3. Eschewed evil.

B. Job’s family.

1. seven sons and three daughters.

2. Job 1:5 – Took care of the spiritual needs of his family.

C. Job’s material wealth.

1. 7,000 sheep.

2. 3,000 camels.

3. 500 yoke of oxen – 1,000 total.

4. 500 she asses – possibility of more.

5. Very great household.

D. Summary of Job’s possessions.,

1. The Bible mentions his personal blessings first, because those are the most important.

2. If there is no spiritual character, there is nothing else.

3. Job is the greatest of all the men of the east.

II. Look at what Job lost.

A. Job 1:13-15.

1. The Sabeans attacked.

2. All the oxen and she asses were taken away.

3. All the servants were killed.

4. Only one servant was left alive to tell Job what happened.

B. Job 1:16.

1. Fire from God (supposedly).

2. All the sheep are burned up.

3. All the servants are burned up.

4. Only one servant was left alive to tell Job what happened.

C. Job 1:17.

1. The Chaldeans came in three different bands.

2. The camels are all carried away.

3. The servants are all killed.

4. Only one servant was life alive to tell Job what happened.

D. Job 1:18.

1. The sons and daughters were all together feasting in the eldest brothers house.

2. A great win came from the wilderness.

3. The house has been destroyed.

4. The children are all dead.

E. Job did not lose what the Bible states about him in Job 1:1.

1. Job remained perfect and upright before God.

2. He remained fearful of God.

3. He still eschewed evil.

III. Look at what Job did.

A. Job 1:20 - He arose, rent his mantle (a sign of grief), shaved his head (another sign of grief), fell down on the ground (another sign of grief), then worshipped God.

B. Job 1:21 - Job said, …Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

IV. More of what Job lost – health, and comfort from wife.

A. Job 2:7,8 – Job was covered with boils from the top of his head to the bottom of his foot.

B. Job 2:9 – Job’s wife urged him to curse God and die.

C. Job 2:10 – Job’s answer to his wife. But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

V. More of what Job had to contend with.

A. Job 2:11-13 – Job’s three "friends" came to him.

B. At first, they were so startled by his appearance, they sat beside him for seven days and seven nights without saying a word.

C. When they began to speak, they accused Job of some secret sin that God will not let him get away with.

VI. Conclusion.

A. Job remained faithful to God through all the questioning of his "friends".

B. Job finally stated in Job 13:15, Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him:

1. Would you serve God if he gave you nothing, or if he asked you to give and not receive.

2. The modern day prosperity gospel is the opposite of what God requires of us.

3. Is God worthy of your adoration if he gives you nothing?

4. Is God precious to you if you get nothing material from him?

5. Would you serve God – go to church – give tithes and offerings, sing to him, read his Bible, study to rightly divide his word if he gave you nothing at all?

C. John 6:26,27 - Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. 27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

1. Are we like these people, who seek God for what we can get out of it?

2. Or do we serve God because he is worthy?
