Romans 5:12

The points of this message are:

I. Definition of Imputation.

II. Adam’s sin is imputed to the entire human race.

III. The sins of believers is imputed to Christ.

IV. The righteousness of Christ is imputed to all believers.

I. Definition of Imputation.

A. The word impute means to reckon, count.

B. The word deals with reality, or facts, not suppositions.

C. It means to charge one responsible for the acts of his representative.

D. It speaks of counting what one person has to another person, whether it is good or bad.

II. Adam’s sin is imputed to the entire human race.

A. The fact of imputation.

1. Romans 5:12 – Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

2. Romans 5:14 – Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam‘s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

3. Ephesians 2:1-3 – All are followers of the prince of the power of the air.

B. Examples.

1. II Samuel 21 – The Gibeonites required seven sons of Saul to be hung to avenge Saul’s breaking of a covenant he had with them, and the subsequent slaughter of them.

a. These seven sons (perhaps even grandchildren as Mephibosheth) of Saul had nothing to do with what Saul did.

b. We were not in the Garden of Eden, but we are still responsible for the sin of Adam because he is our federal head.

2. Joshua 7:21 – Achan confessed he alone took the Babylonian garment, the two hundred shekels of silver, and the wedge of gold, but (verse 24-26) all of his family and possessions were stoned until they died, then they were burned with fire.

a. Achan’s family, his children, his cattle, and his possessions had nothing whatsoever to do with his disobeying the clear command of God.

b. All the family of Achan and all his possessions were destroyed because their federal head had sinned.

3. Hebrews 7:9-10 - And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, paid tithes in Abraham. 10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.

a. The generations of Abraham to Levi goes like this:

1.) Abraham.

2.) Isaac.

3.) Jacob.

4.) Levi.

b. The grandfather of Levi (Isaac) was not born when Abraham gave tithes to Melchisedec.

c. Levi represents the law teaching tithing, which came after the spiritual truths of tithing was taught.

d. Levi is counted as having given tithes to Melchisedec because his federal head, Abraham, gave tithes to Melchisedec.

4. II Kings 5:27 - The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

a. Gehazi received Naaman’s leprosy because he desired a material gift instead of trusting God.

b. All of Gehazi’s descendants would also be leprous forever, even though they had nothing at all to do with Gehazi’s sin.

c. The world might think this is unfair, but God declares it is right and fair and true.

III. The sins of believers is imputed to Christ.

A. Isaiah 53:1-12.

1. Verse 4 – Christ has borne our griefs and sorrows, not his.

2. Verse 5 – Christ was wounded for our transgressions, and our iniquities, not his.

3. Verse 5 – Christ was chastised for our peace, not for his peace.

4. Verse 5 – Christ was beaten and we are healed.

5. Verse 6 – We have all gone astray, but God has laid on Christ all our iniquities.

B. If we cannot sin in another (Adam) then we cannot be redeemed by another.

1. If the principle of Adam’s headship and its resultant sin upon us, is to be excluded, then redemption through Christ is also excluded.

2. The doctrine of imputation is that we are sinners through the federal headship of Adam and we have salvation through the federal headship of Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God.

a. Romans 5:12 – text.

b. I Corinthians 15:45 – And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. The text is speaking about the resurrection.

3. We are made the righteousness of God in Christ, in the same sense in which he was made sin for us.

4. We are made righteous in Christ in the same way, in which we are made sinners in Adam.

IV. The righteousness of Christ is imputed to all believers.

A. Romans 4 speaks of how Abraham came to be blessed of God.

1. Verse 3 – Abraham is justified by belief in God, and God counted him righteous.

2. Verse 6 – True righteousness before God is by faith without works on the part of man.

a. It must be noted that true righteousness and true faith will always produce good works.

b. This is the reconciliation of faith and works as given in James 2:14-24.

B. Isaiah 53 speaks of the substitutionary death of Christ.

1. Verse 9-11 declares that God saw the suffering of his soul, and was satisfied.

2. Verse 11 declares that Jesus, the righteous servant, shall justify many.
