A. The fact of imputation.
1. Romans 5:12 – Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the
world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all
have sinned:
2. Romans 5:14 – Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses,
even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam‘s
transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
3. Ephesians 2:1-3 – All are followers of the prince of the power of
the air.
B. Examples.
1. II Samuel 21 – The Gibeonites required seven sons of Saul to be
hung to avenge Saul’s breaking of a covenant he had with them, and the
subsequent slaughter of them.
a. These seven sons (perhaps even grandchildren as Mephibosheth) of
Saul had nothing to do with what Saul did.
b. We were not in the Garden of Eden, but we are still responsible
for the sin of Adam because he is our federal head.
2. Joshua 7:21 – Achan confessed he alone took the Babylonian
garment, the two hundred shekels of silver, and the wedge of gold, but
(verse 24-26) all of his family and possessions were stoned until they
died, then they were burned with fire.
a. Achan’s family, his children, his cattle, and his possessions
had nothing whatsoever to do with his disobeying the clear command of
God.
b. All the family of Achan and all his possessions were destroyed
because their federal head had sinned.
3. Hebrews 7:9-10 - And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth
tithes, paid tithes in Abraham. 10 For he was yet in the loins of his
father, when Melchisedec met him.
a. The generations of Abraham to Levi goes like this:
1.) Abraham.
2.) Isaac.
3.) Jacob.
4.) Levi.
b. The grandfather of Levi (Isaac) was not born when Abraham gave
tithes to Melchisedec.
c. Levi represents the law teaching tithing, which came after the
spiritual truths of tithing was taught.
d. Levi is counted as having given tithes to Melchisedec because his
federal head, Abraham, gave tithes to Melchisedec.
4. II Kings 5:27 - The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto
thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a
leper as white as snow.
a. Gehazi received Naaman’s leprosy because he desired a material
gift instead of trusting God.
b. All of Gehazi’s descendants would also be leprous forever, even
though they had nothing at all to do with Gehazi’s sin.
c. The world might think this is unfair, but God declares it is right
and fair and true.
