What Kind of Person Was Jesus Christ?

Luke 9:51-56 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, 52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. 53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? 55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

I know I will not be able to tell all about Christ in this short message, but here are a few things to look at.

I.    Jesus came to do the will of his father, and nothing would stop him.

A.     John 6:38 – For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

II.    Jesus was organized.

A.     It is not wrong to be organized.

1.       I knew a man one time that said he never knew when he got up in the morning what he would be doing that day.

2.       He said he was not going to plan, rather let God lead him all day.

3.       That sounds good, but it is not practical for him, or for us.

4.       It was plain by the work he did and the result of that work that he did not plan anything.

B.     It is wrong to “organize” Christ and his will out of our lives.

1.       It is easy to do things out of God’s will thinking we are doing God’s will.

2.

III.    Jesus did not feel hard that those that did not share his vision, or his work.

A.     The Samaritans were evidently offended or hurt because the main purpose of Jesus’ visit was not to them.

1.       Matthew 15:21-28 – the woman who wanted Christ to heal her daughter, but Christ would not at first.  She said the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.

2.       We should be amazed that Christ takes any consideration of us at all, because of our totally depraved condition.

3.       If the main purpose of Christ visit to the earth is not to touch us, yet he does, we should be eternally grateful.

4.       The Samaritans did not understand the “big picture”, but thought the whole world revolved around them.

B.     James and John did not understand the “big picture” either.

1.       Peter, James and John are in the “inner circle” of Christ, but they still did not understand.

2.       We might consider ourselves to be in the “inner circle” of the church, but that does not mean we really understand what Christ wants us to do, or to be.

C.     We need to constantly be aware of which spirit we are following.

1.       I John 4:1 declares we should try the spirits.

2.       Matthew 16:21-23 – Jesus told Peter to “…get thee behind me, Satan…” because Peter did not understand the things of God.

3.       All of us have lack of understanding sometimes.
