Nazareth Misses Christ

Luke 4:31 – “And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.”

This is not like Luke 2:41-52 when Mary and Joseph “lose” Jesus at Jerusalem.  They went back to seek him.  Nazareth never sought to have Jesus return to them.

If Christ is rejected, he will go to somebody else.  (From the viewpoint of human responsibility – I fully understand that God is sovereign, and he will force people to do what he wants them to do, working all this within the scope of human responsibility/sovereignty.)

Nazareth, his home town, rejected him, so he went to Capernaum.

Number 35 ends the first year of Jesus ministry.

Luke 4:23 – “And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.”  It is evident from this passage that Christ had done miracles in Capernaum, but they aren’t recorded in the Bible.  From this point on, Christ will do so many miracles in Capernaum that it will seem he never did any in Capernaum before.

Christ had done works in Capernaum that are not recorded in the Bible, but because the Nazarenes wouldn’t accept him as the Son of God, he would not do miracles in their midst.

Luke 4:44 – Jesus preached in the synagogues of Galilee, but he didn’t go back to Nazareth.

Jesus is known as “Jesus of Nazareth”, but he does not do many miracles, preaching or teaching there.
